Personally Responsible Citizen Links

The "personally responsible citizen" is a form of citizenship focused on the individual development of strong character and a feeling of personal responsibility for the communities of the world.

Founded by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, iCivics is a site that aims to re-engage the youth with civic education and participation by presenting civic challenges through online games. What's more, as the players play games, they can then spend gathered points to vote for sponsored programs doing real-world work such as Water for Africa. At the end of each month, programs with the most points get a funding boost from iCivics' sponsors. It is a unique way to educate youth and give them a way to empower change.

Helping Your Child Become a Responsible Citizen, a publication by the U.S. Department of Education, is a manual for parents and educators that provides instruction for the civic development of children. The manual was created with the purpose of creating a foundation of moral strength and civic virtue in America’s future generations. The program includes instructive materials and activities for elementary, middle, and high-school aged children.

The Maryland Food Bank website is the centralized location for information concerning food donations within the state. The website allows access to locations for food donations, volunteer opportunities, and a virtual food drive where citizens can donate funds electronically.

Martha's Table, in addition to providing volunteer opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels, has its own newsletter where members and prospective volunteers can learn about future volunteer events. A DC metro area resident can expect to be regularly updated with volunteer opportunities related to tutoring, food, and nutrition as well as providing clothing.

The American Red Cross helps those who are in need after fatal events, such as natural disasters. This is one of the main organizations for donating blood or money to alleviate those who are suffering from these disasters. Their collection of donations is made through payments via web, which makes it easy for the citizen to donate. Furthermore, they hold local blood drives all around the country. If a citizen is not eligible to donate blood, they can also volunteer to work for these blood drives.

Habitat for Humanity is a national organization that mobilizes and recruits volunteers to help build houses. Sometimes the organization even does international trips. Habitat for Humanity pairs volunteers with families that need new homes or that need houses fixed and cannot afford to pay for it themselves.
